एक गाँव के पास एक बड़ा सा बरगद का पेड़ था। उसी पेड़ पर एक तोता और एक कबूतर रहते थे। दोनों अच्छे मित्र थे, लेकिन स्वभाव में बहुत अंतर था। तोता रंग-बिरंगा और बहुत बोलने वाला था। उसे अपने सुंदर पंखों और मीठी आवाज़ पर घमंड था। वहीं कबूतर शांत, सरल और समझदार था। वह कम बोलता था, लेकिन सोच-समझकर काम करता था।
एक दिन जंगल में भयंकर तूफान आ गया। तेज़ हवा चलने लगी और बारिश होने लगी। पेड़ ज़ोर-ज़ोर से हिलने लगा। तोता डर के मारे चिल्लाने लगा और इधर-उधर उड़ने की कोशिश करने लगा। कबूतर ने शांति बनाए रखी और तोते से कहा, “डरो मत मित्र, घबराने से कुछ नहीं होगा। मिलकर समाधान खोजते हैं।”
